Become a plumbing PRO In high school
I have the chairman for the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, Frank Denton in today talking about the future of plumbing in Texas. State wide there are high schools starting to teach plumbing! Starting their sophomore year, they can take plumbing courses, just like shop class, so when they graduate they are eligible to take their tradesman exam and start working in the field right away! Texas is ahead of the curve when it comes to trying to recruit more people into the skilled trades.

I'm not a big fan of statements seemingly taken out of context, especially when the specifics are not mentioned. I have a couple of issues with him saying that an electric water heater is much more efficient than a natural gas fired water heater... If he means that in the sense of almost 100% of The electricity that a electric water heater consumes is converted into heat. On the other hand, with a gas-fired water heater, a much lower percentage of the heat created when the gas is burned actually ends up heating the water. Much of it goes out the exhaust and up the chimney. However natural gas is much cheaper vs. electricity in many places. Also, as far as efficiency goes, an electric water heater will lose its heat at a greatly reduced rate in comparison to a gas fired water heater. This is due to the fact that an electric water heater has much better insulation. Whereas any direct fire water heaters have a heat exchanger inside. The same way the heat exchanger will change heat into the water, it will also allow heat to escape from the water as well. This is mitigated through the use of actuated dampers on the exhaust that will close after the burner kicks off, this helps to trap and residual heat inside, and slows down natural convection that would occur thus decreasing the amount of heat lost. There are also water heaters that you will see pvc pipes being used for the exhaust. Generally speaking these water heaters are considered to be 90% plus efficient, whereas the ones with the metal exhaust are considered to be 80% plus efficient. They are able to use PVC for the exhaust without it melting because they extract such a high percentage of the heat from The combustion cycle that the exhaust temperatures are quite cool by comparison. These 90% plus efficient units are significantly more efficient however, they are also more complicated. Cost and efficiency aside many people would still choose a gas-fired water heater over a electric. Even if the gas fired water heater would cost them a bit more to run (which it is usually cheaper) because of the simple fact that in most cases you will have more hot water (higher amount of gallons of hot water in the first hour usually called first hour rating) and better recovery. To put it simply, it would take longer to run out of hot water while taking a shower. Personally, I think by far the best solution is indirect fired water heaters. The one downside is they will not work in every location. If your building does not have a boiler then an indirect fired water heater would not work for you. They are able to be insulated just as well as an electric water heater. They have NO moving parts! It's basically a storage tank that's insulated with a water to water heat exchanger that comes in various styles depending on the brand. Then they have essentially a small thermostat that you will set for what temperature you want your hot water to be. If the temperature of the water inside the tank drops below what you have. The thermostat set at a pump will turn on. The pump will then pump boiler water through the heat exchanger inside until the thermostat is satisfied. Aside from them, usually having the longest lifespan of any water heater I've seen and usually being quite efficient and very well insulated. They also have by far the highest first hour rating and fastest recovery to the point that with a 55 gallon unit, you could take a very hot shower for an indefinite period of time. Depending on the model. You could even do that with a 30 gallon unit and potentially even two showers at the same time! Whereas with your average electric or direct Fired water heater You're lucky if you get a hot shower for more than 20 minutes in some cases less! However, one major drawback is they are significantly more expensive up front to take more knowledge to install. And like I stated previously you have to have a boiler. If you have a boiler, I highly suggest looking into indirect fire water heaters. There's a very well-known brand on the market, making with a line that feature a plastic pressure vessel! These models have a removable stainless steel cap on top which allows you to change the heat exchanger coil if necessary. Also those models come with a 10-year (residential) warranty from the manufacturer If anyone actually read all of this and made it to this point I must say thank you ! Also... (Maybe there is a long form version of this video where they thoroughly explain what he means exactly by saying; electric is more efficient than gas if so then disregard my comment)

It just depends what the joint will be used for... for hvac, compressor for example... we need to braze these instead of solder because of the vibration of the compressor... yes solder can withstand a little more, but the vibration is what we NEED braze for

What is the cause of a loud humming (i.e Car horn) sound when I turn on the taps throughout the house. The house is 22 years old. When I turn the faucets full on, the humming sound fades away. And it happens about 75 % of the time I use the faucets. I have full water pressure too. Any idea that could stop this ignoring humming noise would be greatly appreciated.

My pipes make a continuous hammering/vibration when two or more faucets are on. I can get rid of the sound by slightly adjusting the faucet temperature or flow. This happens a lot when the shower is running and someone turns on a sink or the washing machine starts to fill with water. Any ideas of how to fix this? The noise can be very loud.

My chain and flapper and everything seem to be in fine condition, the length is good and everything too. However, the flapper seems to overextend, so it never falls into the hole properly. I have to open up the tank and force it in, with effort, every single time. It wasn't doing this a week ago, but now it's all the time. Any advice or ideas?

Trade schools and programs like this are so important the world over. I'm from South Africa. My brother went to a trade school. one that taught Electrical, mechanical, drawings, wood working and fitting and turning as part of the school lessons. At the time he finished his drawings were the equavalent of a 1st year university (collage) degree. Think if I remember correctly for the electrical side you walked out with an N3 certificate. Many kids were getting jobs strait out of school. Trades even if the kids leave school and don't go into a profession they learned at school. The world is still better for it and they have skills that can translate into other parts of thier lives. Even if it means been able to fix thier own stuff. Saving them a fortune and no long waits for someone to come help. And it is something they can fall back on if what they wanted to do doesn't pan out. Always good to have a back up plan. With most of my family in the trades. They may not make a fortune. But they always have food on the table. Especially in hard times. The pen pushers are normally the first to go, when the economy goes bad.
